Connecting community finance leaders with training, resources and advocacy to strengthen governance and sustainability for multicultural organisations.

About Canberra Multicultural Treasurer Network

Our Purpose and Mission

CMTN supports treasurers from multicultural community organisations by providing accessible training, practical tools and advocacy. We aim to improve financial literacy, ensure transparent governance, and build confident volunteer and paid treasurers who can sustain community programs and meet reporting obligations with cultural sensitivity and practical guidance.

Who We Serve

We serve volunteer and paid treasurers, committee members, and community leaders from Canberra’s multicultural organisations, including faith groups, cultural associations and newcomer services. Support targets those new to financial responsibilities as well as experienced treasurers seeking sector-specific guidance and peer support.

Governance and Values

CMTN promotes transparent, inclusive and culturally responsive financial governance. Our values include accountability, respect, accessibility and capacity-building. We prioritize plain-language resources, translation support when needed, and culturally safe training environments to ensure equitable participation and trust across communities.

Membership Benefits Overview

Members receive practical templates, workshop discounts, peer mentoring, access to curated resources and priority event registrations. Benefits include ongoing email support, a resource library, and invitations to member-only clinics that help treasurers manage bookkeeping, budgeting and reporting obligations with confidence.

How to Join

Joining is simple: complete our online form, confirm eligibility for community or organisational membership, and choose a membership level. New members are invited to an orientation session and introduced to local mentors. Clear fee information and concession arrangements are published to ensure inclusivity.

Responsibilities and Expectations

Members are expected to uphold good financial stewardship, attend relevant training, share knowledge with peers and follow CMTN’s code of conduct. We ask for respectful participation in events and timely responses to communications to maintain an active, supportive network that benefits all members.

Workshops, Training and Events

Hands-on workshops cover bookkeeping basics, budgeting, financial reporting, reconciliation and software like Xero or MYOB. Sessions use real-world examples, small-group practice and take-home templates so treasurers leave able to complete common tasks, avoid errors and prepare reliable reports for committees and funders.

Monthly meetups connect treasurers for peer problem-solving, guest expert talks and case-study discussions. These sessions build local relationships, enable sharing of templates and tips, and create informal mentorship opportunities that help volunteers manage workload and improve organisational financial practices.

We deliver tailored training for organisations on-site or virtually, addressing specific governance, reporting or cultural needs. Packages include pre-training consultation, bilingual delivery where required, practical exercises and follow-up resources to ensure skills are embedded and staff or volunteers can apply learning immediately.

Essential Financial Resources and Tools

Downloadable templates include budgets, cashbooks, meeting minutes, bank reconciliation forms and audit checklists. Each template is designed for clarity and practical use, with instructions and sample entries to reduce errors and save time for busy volunteer treasurers.

Step-by-step guides and short video tutorials cover reporting cycles, tax obligations, grant acquittals and financial planning. Materials are written in plain language with visuals and translated summaries to increase accessibility for non-native English speakers.

We curate links to regulators, community legal centres, pro-bono accounting services, translation providers and emergency funding sources. These vetted connections help treasurers access specialist advice quickly when complex compliance or legal questions arise.
